I did not enjoy this course at all. I consider myself a high performer and strive to submit excellent work. This is the lowest grade I have received as a college student. In some instances, the individuals who graded my paper did not respond with proper grammar or spelling themselves. I submitted all of my essays in PDF format with the exception of 1 and that particular one had a large gap in the formatting that was not present when I submitted my work. I am very disappointed in the time it took to have my work graded. I guess I do not have a clear understanding for writing an argumentative essay. I cited credible websites but lost points because I didn't provide evidence to support my argument. Wouldn't the information obtained from those credible sites be the evidence needed? I no longer have the love for English I once had after taking this course.

This course was a great start to re-entering the academic world after a very long absence. I feel confident that I can now write academically in subsequent courses.

Great class - but the milestones took forever to grade. Overall good experience though.

Excellent course. It started very easy and slow, then became more difficult. Research paper and APA sections were well organized and informative. Comments and corrections on grading from coaches were great. They obviously spent some time reading. My only issue is that I hoped the grading turn around would have been a little quicker.

Excellent course, really helped me understand the concrete steps necessary to improve my writing. I enjoyed the lessons on proper citation for academic writing too.

Great course! Start working on subsequent Touchstones while waiting for a previous one to be graded. Solid foundational course for English Composition II as well as Public Speaking.

FAQ

  • Q: Does Sophia accept third-party payment for tuition, such as financial aid or military benefits?
A: Sophia courses are not eligible for most third party payment methods, and must be paid for by credit or debit card. Tuition is due at the time of course registration. Sophia offers both full and partial payment plans as part of the registration process.
  • Q: When do the courses start and how long do I have to complete a course?
A: You choose your own start date and have 60 days to complete each course. However, because the courses are self-paced, you can complete them in fewer than 60 days.
  • Q: Where do I get the textbooks for my course?
A: You do not need any textbooks for Sophia courses. All material is taught by video and text-based tutorials that are in the course room, and are included in the cost.
  • Q: How am I graded in the course?
A: Your overall score is derived from how you do on two types of assessments: Challenges, which are formative assessments, and Milestones, which are summative assessments. Sophia’s English Composition I, Foundations of English Composition, and Public Speaking courses also include written assignments, called Touchstones, that also contribute to your overall score.
  • Q: How do I know which courses I should take?
A: Consult with your academic adviser at your university to determine specifically which Sophia courses could fit into your program. You can download the course syllabus directly from our site to share with your school advisor.
